Research & Analysis
Where the roads went: seventy years of rural connectivity
A village-level view of who was connected, and when. The map of rural roads is a record of sequencing, not a score of success.
Connectivity rose, but not as a single curve
Rural road programmes are often summarised as kilometres laid. The more informative view is who was connected, in what order, and how long a settlement waited after a neighbouring one was reached.
Illustrative data
Rural roads rose faster than rail, slower than power
Route density is a different question
Illustrative figures in this piece are drawn from the same national infrastructure series used in India's long build. They are labelled as such. Missing years are shown as gaps, never as zero.
Illustrative data
A long, slow rise, with a hole in the record
What it does not show
A road on a map is not the same as a road that is passable in monsoon, or a bus that runs. Physical reach is the starting measure. Use, quality and cost sit in other indicators.
